5 Solid Solitaire Strategies That Work Every Time

Klondike Solitaire is a classic card game that has been played by generations of people. With trillions of possible hands available, you are very unlikely to ever play the same game twice. One of the frustrating things about the game is that although a majority of games are theoretically winnable, you are unlikely to win most of the time.

For some basic rules on how to play, you can find some instructions at the Microsoft website. If you already know how to play and want to improve your success rate, here are five key strategies.

  1. Always Move Aces and 2s to the Stacks

Whenever you can, move Aces and 2s to the foundation stacks. There is no reason to keep either of these in the tableau because they cannot be of any other benefit, so as soon as one can be placed in the stack, make sure you move it.

  1. Only Move Cards Between Columns for Specific Reasons

If you want to move a selection of cards from one column to another in Klondike, only do this to either reveal a hidden card or to make the suits match up. What this means is that you want the columns to ideally consist of just two suits rather than a mix of all four.

For example, if you have a 5 of Clubs that is currently on a red 6, only move it to the other column if the red 6 is on a 7 of Clubs rather than a 7 of Spades. The more cards from the same suit you get into each column, the easier it will be to win.

  1. Reveal Cards from the Largest Piles

When you play Klondike online at a site like Solitaire Arena, one of the most important tips to keep in mind is to always free a hidden card if you have the option to do so—even if other moves are available. The more hidden cards you can bring into play, the better your odds of success.

Also, if you have a choice of two hidden cards that you can bring into play, choose the card from the pile that has the most hidden cards.

  1. Only Clear a Pile when You Have a King Ready

Don’t clear a pile of cards to leave a space if you don’t have a King ready to place in it. If you have a choice of a red or a black King, think carefully about which one to use. For example, if there is a large stack of hidden cards with a black Jack revealed, choose the black King because there is more chance that you will be able to use a red Queen to then release the Jack.

  1. Think Carefully Before Moving Cards to Stacks

When moving cards to the Ace stacks, only move them when they will reveal a hidden card or where they clear a place for a King that you have ready. Sometimes it is better to keep them in play so you can free up other cards.
